Introductory Blog for Teaching and Learning History

This is me.

My name is Angela. I reside in Southern Maryland and I teach 8th Grade Social Studies. The subject matter is American History which is perfect because that is my favorite thing to learn about. My personal interests are related to antiquing, movies, music-listening and buying freshly made baked goods and ice cream.

My learning goals for this course are related to discussing and discovering new technologies and the pedagogies associated with teaching history. As mentioned I teach 8th Grade American History, and my students tend to struggle with their learning of history even with the use of technology. Don’t let their cellphone usage fool you, a lot of them are ignorant about websites and applications. I am most interested in teaching and learning environments related to the public school system and teacher professional development as well learning environments in higher eduation.

Introduction to Self

My name is Angela and I attended St. Mary’s College of Maryland to get my Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Master of Arts Degree in Teaching. I’ve been teaching for four years since and so I have to balance my teaching, planning, and grading with completing the GMU Digital Public Humanities certificate. I’ve just begun my exploration and study of the digital humanities this past August and its been fun. My final project for Introduction to the Digital humanities was the creation of an OMEKA exhibit for my father’s personal collection of retro lunchboxes. It was cool to see the intricacies involved with metal lunchboxes from the 50s to the 80s.  My interest in digital public history comes from the fact that I am always trying to find new ways to engage my 8th grade students in history content especially if it is a public history site that is accessible online. My learning goals are to pass the class as well as to learn new skills and content that will lead me to create new materials for my students.
